Pistachio Matcha: How to Make a Pistachio Matcha Latte
Two greens that work: how to make a pistachio matcha latte at home, hot or iced, balancing matcha's grassy edge with pistachio's nutty sweetness.
Quick answer
To make a pistachio matcha latte, whisk 1–2 teaspoons of matcha with a little hot water until smooth, then pour over ice and top with pistachio milk (and a little pistachio syrup if you want it sweet). The pistachio milk softens matcha's grassy, slightly bitter edge with a nutty sweetness. For a hot version, top with warm, frothed pistachio milk instead.
Pistachio and matcha are a natural pair: matcha brings a grassy, slightly bitter green tea note, and pistachio milk rounds it off with nutty sweetness and a creamy body. It's one of the nicer ways to use pistachio milk beyond coffee, and it takes five minutes. If you need milk first, make your own or use any carton.
How to make a pistachio matcha latte
Pistachio matcha latte (iced)
- Sift 1–2 tsp matcha into a cup to avoid lumps.
- Add 2 tbsp hot (not boiling) water and whisk until smooth and frothy.
- Fill a glass with ice, stir in optional syrup, and pour in 180–240 ml pistachio milk.
- Pour the matcha over the top, and stir before drinking.
For a hot version, warm and froth the pistachio milk and pour it over the whisked matcha instead of using ice. The frothing notes from our pistachio milk latte apply here too: nut milk makes a softer foam than dairy.
Getting the balance right
Matcha can taste sharp or grassy on its own, so the job of the milk is to soften it. Use unsweetened pistachio milk and add sweetness yourself — a little pistachio syrup or maple — so you can dial it in. Sift the matcha and whisk it with hot, not boiling, water (around 80°C); boiling water makes matcha bitter.
Variations
- Dirty pistachio matcha: add a shot of espresso for depth and a caffeine lift.
- Rose or vanilla: a drop of either leans into pistachio's classic pairings.
- Sweet: use a sweetened or vanilla pistachio milk and skip the syrup.
